The History of Postcards

The Marvellous Success Story of the Postcard

The postcard's success story started roughly 150 years ago. By the beginning of the 20th century postcards were already the preferred medium of written communication.

In those days postcards were what the social media boom is today.

People had albums for the collection of their postcards - like photo albums.

I own one of those showing a beautiful compilation of cards from the 1920s. Browsing through it so much Zeitgeist gets tangible.

How will that look like in another 100 years with our social media remnants by then?

Do you remember …when you were still writing and sending postcards?

That short salute from somewhere with the message: ”I am thinking of you!”

I was always fascinated by those old-fashioned images before photos and photo collages of locations took over.

Old-Postcard-Album

In the early 20th century, the success of postcards was unstoppable mainly because of the speed with which they reached the addressee.

As a result, postmen supposedly got injured by the enormous size and heavy weight of their mailbags they had to carry.

It went so far that there were warnings published about the dangerous influence of that kind of communication. It would badly effect reading and writing habits and communication skills.

In newspapers articles the phenomenon was referred to as a “terror” which would have an irreversible impact on relationships.

Sounds familiar?

Yes, the same today with social media.

The similarities are impressive! Nothing new – all was there already.

Now we POST on social media platforms.

Being born in the 1950s both phenomena are part of my life – real postcards and now social media communication. I have enjoyed it then and enjoy it now because of the speed and directness. And so, I decided to link the two as my medium of expression … e-Post-Cards from BECX.

Postcards always were more personal because being handwritten. I like that aspect and therefore integrated this element.

That´s it – the Post-Card … send contemporary electronically and with the personal touch of nostalgia is my medium of communication with all who like to receive it.

As always,
